    Hey Cam, i missed your live man..... got a question though..... should i avoid dethach my KBG in the summer.... I'm having watering anxiety thinking my water isn't effective due to thatch layers.... I'm also in transition zone (SC) so summers get decently hot (high 80s to high 90s the pass 3 weeks).... love your content man. You've really ease some of my worries. I too am on a first year renovation. I did my backyard (which is half shaded with trees and half direct sun) last fall with KBG and overseeded a little this spring. Ive seen some die off so far during this drought, even with irrigation.. I was contemplating everything about my lawn for weeks until just watching your live. Everyone on YT seem to all have dang near perfect lawns even through summer.... I'm a little relieved now to hear this is normal 1st year.......My front yard is actually bermuda since it's 100% direct sun all day so i left it as a bermuda lawn it's thriving right now......

      First, thanks for supporting the channel and I'm glad that my content has helped and relieved some of your concerns. Next, yes you should avoid dethatching this time of year. As I stated in the live cool season grasses are already under a lot of stress to just survive the heat and dry conditions. Dethatching will add additional stress to the lawn that will be tough for it to recover from this time of year. Major repair/renovation practices should be during cooler temps and high growth periods like fall and early spring. KBG typically requires more sunlight for healthy growth so in shady areas that may not be the best grass type and a fescue would probably perform a little better. That is dependent on the specific cultivars that are used. Hope that info helps and thanks again!

    A roll spreader is a good investment. Mine hangs high on the wall of my shed. Take the handle out. You can’t beat the results you get doing the top dressing. Mix seed with high quality bulk compost. The roll aerator is another great tool. Makes aeration something you do a few times a growing season. Not just once or twice. Another thing you can do is dethatch. This allows your spraying and granular apps to get down through the canopy to the soil. If you have the right tools you don’t have to water so much. I buy. I don’t rent. Its more convenient and you do it more often. Golf courses are aerating all the time. Dethatching. Overseeding. If you want good results you need a roll spreader, dethatcher and roll arrator. And I digress by owning these three things you will save money, especially if you know how to compost fast. I’m not talking about making compost in a year. I’m talking about weeks.

    • @ElevatedLawnscapes
      @ElevatedLawnscapes День назад

      I do not disagree with the different management practices that you named. They all have their place in managing a nice lawn or golf course. You are mentioning compost topdressing which has nutritional value, where in this video I am discussing peat moss which has very little to no nutritional value other than OM. Two very different materials. I still stand by my position that peat moss can be skipped to save that money and get the same results. There are many factors that have to be considered when managing a nice lawn and there are many different ways to do it. What I have been hearing from a lot of people lately is how can they save money on their lawn budget...eliminating peat moss and that spreader is #1 on my the list. Thanks for your comment and watching the video!

      There is some strategy to it. The easiest way is to start with your shortest pass first because it's easier to make a straight short pass than a long pass. Then follow that first pass across the lawn. The next thing is to lock in on a spot at the end of your pass and walk straight to it. Don't focus on the front of the mower focus further out where you are going. Final thing is take your time, dont drink and mow if you want them straight 😂. Those are my tips.

    Dead on correct. I did the same thing. I pre-germ my seeds in water first until I see white roots starting to pop. Then before I plant, I run a hand cultivator like the one in the video, rake over the soil first to break it up, then throw the seeds down, rake over it again, and within a week, grass is growing (with regular watering in the evenings).

      @@ElevatedLawnscapes Definitely. It's actually super easy, especially to fix patches in your lawn. First day, soak it all day. Next day, pull it out, change the water to clean water, and soak for 12 - 14 hours. and repeat in and out every 12 - 14 hours until you see the tiny white roots starting up. Once you see the roots popping out, I usually hand sow onto the patches I need to repair, then use the cultivator to sow em in to the dirt. No need to put your left nut into it, just enough to get em into the dirt. Water again, done. Then just enjoy the new lawn patch after a week. My only warning is, don't do this in mid-July heavy sun/heat. It will kill your seeds quick if you don't have some dirt to put on top to protect the seeds.

    How on earth can you say you will only be mowing twice a week in this intense heat with these dry conditions. There should be absolutely no reason to mow twice in one week during the heart of summer

    • @ElevatedLawnscapes
      @ElevatedLawnscapes 5 дней назад

      If the lawn is not managed properly and not growing (going dormant)as stated in the video there is no need to cut the lawn. If the lawn is properly watered and healthy it will continue to grow and will still need to be cut frequently. It also depends on your HOC of cut. This area being managed at a HOC of 1.25" in a 6 day period during our latest heat wave grew over .75". That meant during my last mow I cut off over half the leaf blade to get back down to the 1.25" HOC which is unhealthy to do to the plant repeatedly. There are a number of factors to managing turfgrass, I typically refrain from saying you should never/"no reason" to do a certain activity in the lawn. Thanks for watching

    • @stephenercolino5253
      @stephenercolino5253 5 дней назад

      @@ElevatedLawnscapes even with watering the height of cut in the summer for cool season turf grass should be at least four inches and no lower to eliminate stress on the turf and no more than once a week. For your controlled little area of lawn that you water constantly you may be able to do what you are doing but for a larger lawn that does not have irrigation and is subject to the intense heat and dry conditions, less mowing at a higher height is the way to go

    • @ElevatedLawnscapes
      @ElevatedLawnscapes 5 дней назад

      @stephenercolino5253 You are continuing to make my point that there are various factors that play into the management practices of a lawn. As I stated, if the lawn is watered and managed properly it will need to be mowed and if not irritated reduce the mowing frequency or not at all. Does having a higher HOC make it less stressful and easier to manage a cool season lawn...OF COURSE, I agree. But does it have to be cut like a hay field to survive and thrive...no. With the right management practices, seed cultivars, and water it can be done and has been proven even by the growers of the seed. The thought that all cool season grass has to be cut at 4" or higher to survive the summer is no longer true with the new and improved cool season grass seed cultivars. With the older stuff having a higher HOC was almost the only to get it to survive. Having a higher HOC in the summer also comes with its challenges especially with disease pressure. So again, there are multiple factors that go into the management of a lawn and its tough to make never/"no way" statements if the grass is managed properly for those conditions/factors. Thanks for the discussion 👍🏾.

    There used to be a few places depending on where you are located? Baltimore and Northern Virginia equipment rentals carried the Blue Ecolawn 250 applicator topdresser or the Earth and TURF SP100 models. These ranged from 200-400$ per day with the options for renting a trailer to haul it for less than another 100 dollars. Secret is to find a place that are not open on Saturdays and if you rent it after 12-2pm on Friday it won't be do back until Monday. If the place of business opens Saturdays you can rent it Saturday and return it on Monday without any additional fees. You end up with multiple day rentals for the price of 1 day. This applies to any of the rental items. This information was about 2 years ago and as we all know Covid19 changed prices and policies that we thought would never be changed

    So true. I am currently ATTEMPTING (key word attempting, though I have faith) to grow grass in a gravel lot. I think with this tool (I already have one), some peat moss (to help with water retention, gravel helps with drainage), fertilizer and good water, I'll get there.

    • @ElevatedLawnscapes
      @ElevatedLawnscapes 7 дней назад

      Give it a try. I'm not completely understanding the gravel part. Grass needs soil or sand for proper growth, not gravel. Removing the gravel and adding topsoil would be the better option for consistent success.
